Teapot to Table Top

'Teapot to Table Top' booklet is free for the asking in the USA
Ten leading women chefs have each contributed a recipe using tea to a collection offered in a free, sturdy and colorful ring-bound booklet.
The recipe collection, "From Teapot to Table Top," includes information about types of teas - black, green, chai or white - as well as about heart health and tips for using tea.
The 10 recipes range from Moroccan Spiced Apricot Chicken, created by Lisa Schroeder of Mother's Bistro & Bar, Portland, Ore., to Red Dress Vanilla Rose Pound Cake, from Emily Luchetti of San Francisco's Farallon Restaurant.
Tea manufacturer Celestial Seasonings, which is offering the booklet, says it has made a donation to WomenHeart, the National Coalition for Women with Heart Disease, in honor of each chef who contributed a recipe.
The book is available by calling toll-free (866) 211-0374. [USA only]

Ceduna's state teapot winner

Joy Stott, of Ceduna, has won the Cancer Council's "Best teapot” competition for the Mid North region.
Joy entered her teapot in the competition after reading about it in the Sentinel a few weeks ago.
Joy said "When I read about the competition in the West Coast Sentinel I just had to enter my unique teapot, which belonged to my mother.
Joy said her mother was given the teapot by a friend when Joy was just a child and she believes it would have to be at least 60 years old.
The elephant teapot has no markings on it to determine its age or origin.
Joy is one of eight regional winners from South Australia and she is now in the running to go on and win the State title.
The State winner will be announced later this week.
The ladies of Ceduna have organised a teapot display, which will be held at the Ceduna Memorial Hall on Thursday May 25 for the Biggest Morning Tea.
Anyone interested in putting their teapot in the display can bring it to the Ceduna Memorial Hall Ceduna,South Australia from 9 am on the morning of May 25th.

When Kathleen Bailey collects teapots, she collects more than just the pot. She gathers the memories and stories each teapot represents.
Bailey, who owns about 75 teapots, shares a part of her collection with the public through an exhibit at the Clayton Historical Museum just in time for Mother's Day. She's been collecting teapots since the 1970s, usually finding them in flea markets and antique stores.
Every design, color and size imaginable can be seen on display -- from Asian to European styles and old-fashioned American designs.
Bailey recalls that her mother was a woman ahead of her time. She was already into green tea decades before people started touting its benefits.
Years later, she received her first teapot -- an English teapot shaped in the form of a house -- in the 1970s from her husband.
'It was my pride and joy,' she said. 'This was what started it all.'
Since then, Bailey's been hitting the local flea markets and thrift shops in search of unusual teapots to add to her growing collection. She would even pick up a few teapots during her travels.
'Then it got to be like a sickness,' she joked. 'It was a fun thing to do. The weather would be nice and I'd pick up a teapot or two.'
A purple teapots stands out and closer inspection reveals it was made by Bailey herself.
'I painted it purple because you don't see teapots in purple,' she said.

The Artful Teapot Dixon Memphis

"Orange Pekoe" by Michael Hosaluk
The exhibition opens Sunday and runs until September 24th 2006.
On display are 250 teapots from the more than 6,000 amassed by collectors Gloria and Sonny Kamm, who are no relation to Dixon director Jay Kamm. The show was curated by ceramics authority Garth Clark, who wrote the accompanying catalogue.
The eclectic exhibition, which offers a selection of historical teapots to set a context for the show, consists primarily of objects created by such important contemporary artists as David Hockney and Roy Lichtenstein.
Despite the exhibition's contemporary emphasis, said Jay Kamm, "The Artful Teapot" makes a good fit at the Dixon because it "sort of picks up where our Stout Collection of 18th Century porcelain leaves off. It's kind of a takeoff on that."
"The Artful Teapot," said the Dixon director, offers "great stuff, wonderful stuff. The Kamms really challenged artists to take it to the extreme, to push the envelope. Some of it is outlandish and some of it is exquisite. Some are beautiful and some make you laugh."

The Cancer Council of South Australia is calling on the community to scour their kitchens in search of the State's best teapot in conjunction with their most enjoyable fundraiser, Australia's Biggest Morning Tea.

Here is a photo of my angelic spouted form being lifted from the Raku kiln at about 1000 degrees centigrade!

and here she is emerging from the sawdust!

Is it a bird?

No it's an angelic, spouted form and was my first attempt at raku firing.
The term raku is derived from the Japanese Kanji character meaning "enjoyment" or "ease"....and I certainly enjoyed myself!
It's a form of Japanese pottery characterized by low firing temperatures and the removal of pieces from the kiln while still glowing hot. The pot is removed from the hot kiln and placed into a container of sawdust to stain the exposed clay surfaces with carbon.
