Harrogate Antique and Fine Arts Fair

The oldest known provincial teapot has pride of place on a stand at the Old Swan Hotel Antiques fair this weekend in Harrogate.
The Queen Ann Teapot, made in Newcastle in 1705 by Francis Batty, has the crest of the Masterman and Sykes family and was sold in 1976 at Sothebys.
It came from the private collection of Sir Richard Sykes.

The Art of the Teapot

KALAMAZOO -- An exhibition opening May 12th at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts Michigan challenges the notion teapots must be short and stout with a handle and a spout.
The vessels in the invitational show "Teatime: The Art of the Teapot" range from nursery-rhyme conventional to outside-the-pot artistic, such as a tiny teapot that looks like a girl sitting on a log and a shrine to this iconic vessel that hangs on the wall, said Paul Flickinger, chairman of the multi-dimensional show. The exhibit includes 150 works by as many artists from around the country, including 16 from Michigan (none are from the Grand Rapids area).
The diversity of submissions is what Flickinger suspected would result from a call to participate in a ceramics show based solely on the classic yet complex form of the teapot.
The Art of the Teapot" includes a tour of the KIA's walk-in kiln and demonstrations of teapot-making by Hollister and three other artists: Bennet Bean of Blairstown, N.J.; Richard Bresnahan of Avon, Minn.; and Fong Choo, a Singapore-born American potter in Louisville, Ky.

‘Table Manners’

THEY’RE in just about every kitchen in the country, they’re so important that they have their own rituals, but how often do we take time to appreciate the marvels of the teapot?
Tullie House’s latest exhibition, ‘Table Manners’, includes a collection of 70 teapots, displayed on stilts and reflecting the challenge involved in creating a teapot that is functional, efficient and sculptural. Teapots are the ‘grand dame’ of tableware, emblems of the UK’s national drink, the centrepiece of a familiar tea-making ritual but often reserved just for special occasions. As a group, teapots provides a fascinating commentary on the history and culture of ceramics.
Table Manners brings together everyday household ceramics by 17 UK and international makers and celebrates the richness and diversity of contemporary international tableware in the most important touring exhibition of its kind in the UK for 30 years.
Complementary displays of tableware drawn from the archaeology and decorative art collections will also be shown..
Table Manners runs at the Carlisle museum until Sunday, May 21. Open 10am-5pm Monday to Saturday, 12pm-5pm Sunday. Admission free.

Larry Spears teapots, highlight creative décor while remaining solidly functional.
So his efforts are simultaneously beautiful and dutiful.
“It started as a hobby,” said Spears, speaking at his studio near Story in Brown County. “And then it turned into something more.”
Two of Spears’ porcelain efforts will be part of the multi-artist teapot show, “Spouting Off,” opening today at Columbus’ Gallery 423 Washington St.Indianna USA
Local artists are among the more than 20 specialists included in the display, which runs until May 19th.
Spears, a Columbus native, sells works from his Web site, www.spearspottery.com from a display at the Brown County Art Guild and from the 20 shows per year he attends all over the country.
