Chad Frownfelter teapot maker

Open Studios event aims to raise awareness about New Bedford Massachusetts artists.
The inaugural New Bedford Open Studios takes place this weekend. At least 65 artists will open their studios to the public from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.
"There are a lot of good artists in New Bedford," said sculptor Chad Frownfelter. "I feel like they don't get the recognition they deserve."
Mr. Frownfelter, 31, makes teapots and other functional objects in character designs.
One of his teapots, a clown in a roller coaster car, pours two cups of tea at once from the dual exhaust.
Another depicts President George W. Bush sitting on the Earth, riding it like a horse. Tea pours from the globe, and the teapot sits on a tray shaped like a pile of Monopoly money.
New Bedford Open Studios will give art lovers a window into the places where local artists create paintings, prints, furniture, sculpture, ceramics, textiles, jewelry, and glass.

Teapot collectors seek aid for child charity book

DORIS and Rosemary with one of their many teapots which was used as the inspiration for their stories.DORIS and Rosemary with one of their many teapots which was used as the inspiration for their stories.
TWO novelty teapot collectors are using their shared interest to write a book and raise money for children in need throughout Middleton.
The Middleton & North Manchester Guardian is backing their idea with an offer to adminster the profits free of charge from the sale of the books - but to get the ball rolling they first need sponsors to help get the book published.
Inspired by the eccentric and fascinating designs of the teapots in their collection, Doris Ligget, 69, and Rosemary Platt-Heaney, 67, decided to combine their efforts and talents to write a collection of children's stories and poems for local child-based good causes.
Rosemary, who was also the author of the popular Bobby Bear books for Booth Hall Hospital in the 1980s, said: “Each story and poem is a unique magical adventure. We wanted to do something that would help the children and as we were both avid teapot collectors we decided to use that as our base and came up with the idea of writing a book about magical teapots.
“The characters are all picked from our own collections. There is a story about a old fashioned motorcar teapot and a clown teapot together with nine other pieces which we think will appeal to all children.”
The two grandmothers met in 1997 through a line dancing class and together developed their love of writing and raising money for charity.
Doris, of Ullswater Drive, said: “I used to write short stories which I would read to my grandchildren. Then when I met Rosemary she steered me through a difficult time in my life and helped me with my writing. I now write all the time, I find it is a great outlet and lets you enter a different world.”
All the stories are now completed and they are now looking for sponsorship to get their book, entitled Teapot Tales for Tweenies, published.
The Middleton Guardian has agreed to be trustee for the charity to ensure the writers' wish of making sure every penny collected goes to help local children.
Rosemary, of Rosthwaite Close, said: “We want every child to receive every penny of what we make. We don't believe in administration costs. We have been very lucky so we wanted to do something to help those children in hospital and those with learning difficulties and with disabilities.”

Wedgwood Dancing Hours teapot

Wedgwood Dancing Hours teapot in pale blue jasper, circa 1810.
Jasperware was the innovation of which the great potter, himself, was most proud.
Josiah Wedgwood was a rarity: a prominent and successful man who embraced radical causes.
He actively supported the American Revolution and campaigned against slavery. Wedgwood devoted the closing decades of the 1700s to the manufacture of attractive, serviceable, and above all inexpensive tea services. When the government abolished the onerous tea tax in 1784, sales of tea -- and Wedgwood's teapots -- boomed. Tea became what it is today -- the national drink of England. Many of old Josiah's teapots were durable enough to survive to this day.

"Wesley Wedgwood" Teapot

This teapot is a nineteenth century reproduction of the famous
teapot presented to John Wesley by Josiah Wedgwood in 1761.
The original teapot is preserved in Wesley's house on Chapel Road,
London. Rev. John Cennick wrote the inscribed "Wesley Graces".
The teapot's design is said to have been copied from Wedgwood's
wife's apron and is called "Calico" or "Wesley Wedgwood".
The inscription reads...
"We thank thee Lord for this our food
But more because of Jesus blood
Let manna to our Souls be given
The bread of Life sent down from Heaven

Be present at our Table Lord
Be here and everywhere ador'd
These creatures blefs & grant that we
May feast in Paradice with thee"

Internationally known ceramist Yoshiro Ikeda was felled by a stroke last December. He almost gave up his art -- until it saved him.
When Yoshiro Ikeda suffered a stroke a year ago, the aftereffects barely slowed him down.
The internationally recognized artist -- he is head of the ceramics department at Kansas State University -- continued to shape clay vessels and teapots by hand. He continued to decorate them with glazes of his own concoction, and loaded them into the kiln for firing. He often repeated the process, adding marks and layers of colors to his designs.
The stroke a year ago didn't bother Ikeda too much, he said. But he had a second stroke last December.
"The second one really hurts," Ikeda said by phone from his office at KSU earlier this month. "I cannot speak right; balance was terrible, walking was terrible. I thought about quitting everything."
Proof that he didn't is on view at Trish Higgins Fine Art at Inn at the Park on Douglas Avenue. Sitting in the parlor of the neoclassic bed-and-breakfast are five ceramic vessels made by Ikeda last summer.
Ikeda's spirit was put to the test when his body failed him last December. It was his physician who encouraged him to keep working with clay.
His art became his physical therapy. His condition has improved.
"I never take a break," Ikeda said. "I am making work continually. I never slow down."

Stout collection of teapots comes to N.C.

SPARTA, N.C. - In May, a 51-foot tractor-trailer snaked through the mountains of Allegheny County and deposited at a warehouse here 1,600 boxes containing more than 4,000 teapots.
And that's only the half of it.
The Sparta Teapot Museum is under way, with the nationally-known collection of millionaire lawyer Sonny Kamm moving from California to North Carolina, perhaps as many as 10,000 items, including one almost 6 feet tall. Museum backers have bought land downtown, hired an architect and are raising money.
Backers think the teapot museum, about seven miles from the Blue Ridge Parkway, will ring cash registers with an estimated 61,000 visitors a year.
"This is an opportunity for the arts to lead the revitalization," Halsey said.
Curator Mary Douglas works at a computer entering each piece - teapots by famous artists and more humble items - wondering just how many pieces Kamm has.
"There's no way to know until it's all counted," Douglas said. "We need to start a betting pool."
From his Los Angeles home, Kamm kept up with North Carolina's teapot tempest. He sees a silver lining: teaching people about the museum.
Kamm has always wanted his collection to go to a small town and be a focus for economic development.
Kamm is a populist collector, as likely to buy work at a flea market as at Christie's auction house.
The collection he and his wife, Gloria, have was amassed over 25 years.
The collection includes a teapot in the shape of a V8 engine and others with portraits of Elvis and Marilyn Monroe and one made of folded $5 bills.
The Kamms still are collecting, sending about 10 pieces per month directly to the Sparta warehouse.
"It's overwhelming," curator Mary Douglas said.
Halsey said the collection has not been appraised but has been valued at $5 million.
Kamm wants crowds in Sparta, too.
"We want them to laugh, talk to the people they're with," he said.
"we don't want a serious mausoleum-type museum. We have to appeal to a wide variety of people who travel the Blue Ridge Parkway, all the way from hunters to grandmas."

The teatem pole

Rod Humby never liked the sight of the washing line post in his garden. So he turned it into a ceramic totem sculpture with salvaged and scavenged crockery. It looks precarious, but actually the original metal pole runs up the middle, with the pieces threaded over the top and bonded with coloured mortar.
It never fails to get a comment and an opinion from anyone who sees it!
