Suffragette tea service auctioned for £6,000
A tea service connected to the suffragette movement made three times its expected price at Bonhams in London yesterday.
The service, decorated with the badge of the Women's Social and Political Union, fetched £6,240.
The collection of six cups and saucers, small plates, teapot and cake plate had been estimated to fetch £2,000.
Dating back to 1905, the service contains the symbol of a trumpeting angel under the banner "Freedom".
The WSPU was founded in 1903 by Emmeline Pankhurst and her daughters, Christabel and Sylvia. Sylvia, an artist, may have designed the insignia on the tea set.
