Celebrity Teapot Auction
It was held at the UWI Mona Visitors' Lodge on Sunday. First Global Bank, the Jamaica Cancer Society and the Pauline Brown Fund Committee staged the imaginative benefit to fund their efforts to provide financial aid for cancer survivors.
Among the 'celebrities' who decorated the teapots were the Hon. Portia Simpson Miller, international dancehall artistes 'Sean Paul' Henriques and Orville 'Shaggy' Burrel, the Most Hon. Sir Howard Cooke and Lady Cooke, Douglas Orane, Earl Jarret, The Most. Hon. Edward Seaga, Nancy McLean, radio personalities Alan Magnus and Dorraine Samuels, Security Minister Dr. Peter Phillips, Commissioner Lucius Thomas and businessman Kenny Benjamin, among others.
When the Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller's teapot was up for bidding, Jones announced in jest that the pot is a hot commodity, as she will not have time to sign pots after being sworn into office. Following that comment, her pink teapot painted with yellow flowers, earned the highest bid among the pots, going for an impressive $26,000. International dancehall artiste Shaggy's fetched the next highest bid for his teapot, as two ladies engaged in an all-out bidding war, which climaxed at $17,000 for the right to take home a little piece of 'Mr. Lover Lover' himself. The teapot of outgoing Prime Minister the Most Hon. P. J. Patterson also went for $14,500, and Sean Paul's for $10,500.

For one gallon of Iced Tea:
Our kettle holds about 12 cups (2-1/2 liters) of water, our tea pot holds about half as much. So boil the water in the kettle and add five tea bags to the tea pot.
When the water boils, fill the tea pot and steep for five minutes (no more).
Pour the tea into the tea pitcher and refill the tea pot with water (same bags) and steep for ten minutes.
Add this tea to the pitcher, top it off with cold water or ice, and sweeten (we use 1-1/3 cup sugar
Enjoy cold over ice.

Western Stoneware closes

Western Stoneware Monmouth, Illinois USA., located on U.S. 67 about a 45-minute drive south of the Quad-Cities.
Production will end this Friday at the plant, where competition from foreign pottery makers has become too much to bear, said co-owner Jim Hutchins of Monmouth, who has owned the plant since 1990 with Steven Schwab of Chicago.
“It’s very sad,” Hutchins said. “We’ve been trying to fight it off, but we’ve just had a steady erosion of business over the past several years, and it’s a result of the imported product. We just can’t compete with it.”

Pat Scull

Growing up outside of Washington, Pat Scull provided entertainment for her two younger sisters by drawing people and scenes and telling stories about them. She studied painting in college and painted for several years before going into printmaking, woodworking, then ceramics. Regardless of the medium, the 53-year-old Raleigh artist's work has included mixed-media and three-dimensional aspects. In Scull's ceramic pieces, which include a series of textures and glazes, one might find jewelry, hardware and other found objects along with architectural salvage.

TRUCKLOAD OF TEAPOTS

Mary Douglas loads boxes of teapots onto a hand truck inside a tractor-trailer that arrived in Sparta recently from California.
“We’re trying to keep them organized as we unload them,” said Jonathan Halsey, the Sparta Teapot Museum project manager,as he helped hoist boxes into stacks.“My biggest fear is that one of these will topple over as we’re unloading them,” he said, half joking and half in fear that it may really happen. But it didn’t.
The boxes of teapots, were all unloaded without incident by a half dozen people.“We now have about 75 percent of the collection in Sparta.
