Teapot collector changes deal

A wealthy art collector from Los Angeles said this month that he has pulled out of a commitment to exclusively display his eclectic collection of teapots at a museum in Sparta intended for them.
The Sparta Teapot Museum has raised $4.2 million, including more than $1 million of federal and state money, to draw tourists to a region hard-hit by manufacturing losses.
Now organizers say that even with the loss of the teapot collection they don’t intend to return any of the money they have raised.

Record number of teapots

Sue Blazye is in the Guinness Book of records for the largest collection of teapots, currently standing at 5548.

Sparta Teapot Museum

Organizers of the Sparta Teapot Museum, which received $900,000 in taxpayer-funded grants and a bushel of unwanted publicity, are planning to build a very different museum than first envisioned. It's expected to be a fraction of the original size and won't focus exclusively on a donated teapot collection.
The wealthy principal donor plans to take many, though not all, of his teapots elsewhere and has all but abandoned the idea of building a 10,000-square-foot foundation headquarters in the small N.C. mountain town of Sparta.
Sonny Kamm, the prominent Los Angeles securities lawyer who planned to donate his 10,000 teapots, said he's exploring other options.

John Elder Best In Show prize

Each year, the late Nellie Allen Smith is honored by Cape Fear Studios with a commemorative juried pottery competition with assistance from her husband, Ritchie Smith.
A Best In Show prize of $250 went to John Elder for his small porcelain “Teapot.”
“Its exquisite and subtle carving, understated yet elegant, present an elegant overall decorative motif of criss-crossing bamboo stalks,” Gordon said. “With its loosely woven handle and pale celadon tonalities,
I see ‘Teapot’ as a modern homage to Sung Dynasty porcelain ware.’’
