Gilhooly made his mark with the 1960s California Funk movement at UC-Davis, where he studied with Robert Arneson. These artists created ceramic sculptures that lampooned all matter of subjects, from still life to politics. Gilhooly created an absurdist “frog culture” that frequently featured food in unusual ways.
